Sassicaia - Tenuta San Guido
SASSICAIA
Italy's most famous wine is actually unpretentious and yet Sassicaia has revolutionised the Italian wine world.
The story
It all began with the planting of 1.5 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon. The calendar showed the year 1948 and Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, an enthusiastic Bordeaux lover, wanted a wine he could make himself for his own use. The few bottles were initially only served on the family table.
20 years later, his son Marchese Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta managed to get the wine sold together with his friends, the Antinori family. An additional 54 hectares were purchased and Antinori's mastermind Giacomo Tachi pressed the Sassicaia from then on.
The wine became better and better known every year. Until then, however, it could only be labelled as a table wine, as no international grape varieties were allowed to be used for classified wines.
The definitive breakthrough came in the 1980s when the eternal Robert Parker blessed the 1985 vintage with 100 points.
Since 1993, Sassicaia has been a DOC in its own right - a unique process in Italy for a wine to be awarded DOC status.
Today, production totals 200,000 bottles and is practically sold out every year.
Tenuta San Guido Wines
Three wines are produced at Tenuta San Guido: Le Difese, Guidalberto and the flagship Sassicaia.
Le Difese, first vintaged in 2002, is the latest arrival. It is an extremely pleasant, smooth, and versatile wine that welcomes with grace the selection of grapes while it exemplifies its qualities when paired with food. Le Difese takes its name from the teeth of the wild boar, depicted in gold on the label.
The Guidalberto can be considered a second wine. However, the fact that it contains Merlot, unlike Sassicaia, gives it the status of a wine in its own right. Guidalberto is always very accessible and flattering.
Sassicaia is always a cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The grapes come from various vineyards above the famous village of Bolgheri. It matures for 24 months in French barriques.
