Tasting Notes

The 2022 La Ricolma is going to challenge some of all-time great vintages at San Giusto. Exotic and sumptuous, the 2022 offers up copious dark fruit, lavender, dried herbs, chocolate, and mocha. Harvest took place on September 22 and 26, late for Merlot, but not as late as the estate aims for with their pruning regime. In other words, the intense heat led San Giusto to bring in this fruit a touch early, and that paid off in spades. Readers will find a vertical, structured Ricolma for the cellar. This is vintage 2022 at its finest. I would love to own the 2022 Ricolma. It’s a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. Aging was done in 500- and 225-liter barrels.
Anticipated maturity: 2030-2047

One of Italy’s great Merlots, this wine is a perennial benchmark for international varieties cultivated in Tuscany. The San Giusto a Rentennano 2022 La Ricolma is an organic wine that straddles a delicate balance between richness and elegance. This vintage leans a little bit more onto the concentrated side of the spectrum with black fruits, a velvety texture and excellent complexity. Beyond the fruit, I get hints of toasted spice, earth, blue flower, green caper and apricot. La Ricolma ages in 225-liter barrel from tight-grained Allier and Nevers oak for 22 months. Production is 4,752 bottles.
Anticipated maturity: 2025-2046
