Tasting Notes
Vinous 91
The 2016 Marquis d’Alesme Becker has been a little variable in the past, with inconsistent performances at Southwold. This example has a savoury, rather Mediterranean nose that perhaps lacks the composure and élan of the 2019 or 2020. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and gentle grip, thankfully cleaner and more defined than previous bottles. Perhaps it shows a little sur-maturité towards the finish, a bit jammy compared to other vintages. Not bad, though not my favourite vintage in recent years.
Anticipated maturity: 2026-2042
Robert Parker 96
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Marquis d’Alesme Becker leaps from the glass with gregarious notions of plum preserves, creme de cassis and Black Forest cake with hints of potpourri, star anise, menthol and tapenade. Full, rich, firm and grainy, with fantastic freshness lifting the densely packed palate, it has a long, beautifully fragrant finish.
Anticipated maturity: 2020-2047
